  • When in doubt, chill!

Claudine Barretto and Raymart Santiago (NPPA Images)The Mon Tulfo-Claudine Barretto-Raymart Santiago "Thrilla in NAIA"  could have been prevented had the three people involved knew how to chill, or, in a psychologist's parlance, learned how to manage their anger.

It's human nature to get angry. But, as the airport incident showed,  how you handle that anger makes a world of a difference.   It could spell the difference between violence and a peaceful end to a problem.

Psychologist and anger management specialist Randy Dellosa says that "when handled poorly, conflict can easily escalate into verbal mud-slinging, finger-pointing, character assassination and violent outbursts."

You've seen it on YouTube. You've heard the charges and counter-charges in this Tulfo-Santiago brawl. And you know how it has grown to be  downright ugly.

The Tulfos and Santiagos ended up losing something precious: the gift of living their life peacefully — for the time being, at least.

The sad thing is the situation could have been averted.  Yes, you can argue. But

  • A touchy-feely Spider-Man

How do you make a well-loved story and superhero as relevant to today’s generation as they were years back?

For “The Amazing Spider-Man” director  Marc Webb, it’s a matter of guts and heart.

Guts, because you have to put the hero back in a superhero that has become a franchise spawning two and a half billion dollars and which features a legendary, beloved comic book character that’s been around for 50 years.

Heart, because this latest installment tweaks the webslinger’s story. It shows Spider-Man’s alter ego, Peter Parker, struggling to investigate why his parents disappeared and coming to grips with his newfound, arachnid-style abilities.

That’s because there’s a Peter Parker in Webb, and he’s only too glad to bring it out in the open. Webb thinks he’s not alone.  There’s a Peter Parker in everyone. And that’s where he thinks the magic comes from.

“There is an incredibly innocent and tender quality to Peter Parker. He's not a billionaire, he's not an alien, he's a kid. He has trouble with

  • Jed: New singers are my wake-up call

Instead letting new singers faze him, Jed Madela would rather take their presence as a challenge, a wake-up call for him to improve his craft.

He knows that “anytime soon, somebody better can come and take your place.”

Jed knows that even if he holds the distinction of being “the only guy na bumibirit,” somebody else can take his place in an instance. But  instead of losing sleep and seeing this as a threat, Jed prefers to look at it as a wake-up call, a reason to keep on being a better performer.

“I use it to my advantage instead of letting me feel nervous,” he relates.

Besides, what’s another potential obstacle when Jed has gone through a lot worst as a struggling performer?

“Wala kaming pahinga noon. Minsan, wala pang tao. Nag-perform na ako na one table lang ang nanonood, musical arranger ko pa ang nandon. Nadaanan ko na ang lahat ng pambabastos.May nagsabing huwag na kaming tumugtog,” he recalls.

    Positive thinking

He felt bad and embarrassed. But the optimist knew there are always people

Raymart Santiago and wife Claudine Barretto filed charges of grave threat and serious oral defamation and a petition for Writ of Amparo against borthers Erwin, Raffy and Ben Tulfo at the Quezon City Prosecutor’s Office.

DZMM’s Radyo Patrol Balita aired this report on Saturday, May 12, together with an interview with Raymart who said he had to file the charges to protect his family. He added that getting death threats is something new to him.

The same report says Mon Tulfo, who was directly involved in the NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airpot) 3 brawl on Sunday, May 6, has elevated his charges against the Santiagos from slight to serious physical injuries.

Mon decided to do this after UP PGH findings showed that he suffered from  serious damage to the ear, throat and eyes.

Meanwhile, TV5 is asking the Court of Appeals to stop implementing the 20-day preventive suspension the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) slapped on   “T3”, the Tulfo brothers’ show on theRead More »
